Merial is partnering with your local public health officials to fight local epidemics of rabies in wildlife populations by providing a unique, highly specialized and safe oral rabies vaccine called RABORAL V-RG®. RABORAL V-RG® is approved for immunization of raccoons and coyotes, two of the most significant wildlife carriers of rabies in North America.
Strategic use of this vaccine by public health officials has proven to reduce the rate of rabies infection in wildlife populations. So with RABORAL V-RG®, your local public health officials have the ability to vaccinate wildlife, protecting these wild animals from this deadly disease as well as reducing potential infection of pets, livestock and humans.
Why is wildlife rabies vaccination so important? In the United States, rabies remains a significant health threat. During 2003, more than 7,000 cases of rabies were reported in animals and three cases were reported in human beings. In all of these instances, the outcome for the infected individual was death. More than 90% of these rabies cases occurred in wild animals. The wildlife species most often infected with rabies virus are: skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats. In most cases, these animals were tested for rabies because they were showing abnormal behavior or had direct contact with domestic animals or humans.
